HONOLD'S ORNAMENTAL IRONWORK
How to Measure for a Custom Iron Gate

Arriving at measurements that will make your new gate fit like a glove and be pleasant to
install are not difficult, really!  We'll walk you through the process.  If you have any
questions, please call us at (206) 779-0668.

The most important thing to remember is that we custom build your gate exactly from these
dimensions...so accuracy is everything.  In ironwork fabrication, 1/8" can be the difference
between the perfect fit and an expensive problem to correct.  We cannot issue refunds to
customers who have incorrectly calculated the size of their gate.

Only a few basic tools are required for good measurements: a level, an accurate
measuring tape, a notepad and a pencil.

Here are the questions we'll need answered:

If you have existing posts, columns, walls, etc.:

  • We need the width of the space between your verticals at ground level, the middle
and at the highest point.  We will build to the smallest of these numbers.  We will
provide shims (typically 1/8" washer spacers) for out-of-plumb posts.

  • Let's see how plumb your posts are.  Place a level on each post--the bubble should
be exactly in the middle.  Let me know if they're a 1/4" or more off plumb.

  • If you have irregular surfaces such as brick or stone, the best way to measure is to
take 2 long straight edges, butt them up to the columns and plumb them.  Then pull
a tape measure from one side to the other.  This will determine the maximum space
that your gate can be built to.

  • Is the ground surface level?

If you'll be purchasing posts with your gate:

  • We need the maximum space that your gate, including posts, can take up.  From
there, we will account for the hinges, clasp and framework to determine the exact
    dimensions of your gate.

  • If you have a path, how wide is it?  Do you want the posts to be a certain distance
from either side of the path?

  • Is the ground surface level?

We generally subtract 2" from the height to allow clearance at the bottom of the gate.  If
you have a surface that's unlevel and requires more clearance, or other unique needs,
please let us know.
